Bruthen

Bruthen is a town in East Gippsland on a banks of the Tambo River with a population of about 500.

Get in

Bruthen is on the East Gippsland Rail Trail and is about a 30 minute bus ride from nearby Bairnsdale. If you're travelling along the Princes Highway, it is a few minutes off the highway via either the B500 Great Alpine Road or the C605 Swan Reach Road. You can also reach the town by using the C620 from Nowa Nowa.

Tambo is not built to face the Tambo River, but rather a central nature strip between the service road and the highway. This is quite pretty park, with gardens and visitor information boards.

  • Tambo River. You can walk over the highway bridge or the rail trail bridge over the river. The Tambo is not navigable to this point, but you can cool off a little in it.

Buy

  • Berry farm. Around 3km from town on the Omeo road, there is a berry farm, selling raspberries, blackberries and boysenberries for around $4 a punnet. Season Dec-Feb.

Eat

There is a choice of two take-away style eateries.

  • Le Cafe
  • 🌍 Bruthen Bakery, 62 Main St, +61 475 555 419. Good for pies, sausage rolls, pastries and cakes.

Drink

  • 🌍 Bruthen Brewery, 46 Main St, +61 3 5157 5307. W-Su 10AM-5PM. Six types of beer are sold here: pale ale, wheat beer, pilsner, stout IPA and brown ale. You can have a feed here and they will recommend which beers pairs best with the meal.
