Buchanan (Liberia)
Buchanan is a city in Grand Bassa.
Understand
A laid-back city that has a tiny grid-patterned city centre and a beach about 5 km to the south of it. The beach is not maintained. It also has a sizable community of ghanese Fanti-people.
Get in
It takes around two hours driving from Monrovia once the sealed road is finished (2012).
See
Lumco industrial complex - Industry with a train line to transport iron ore.
Beach - A beach that is no longer maintained that is quite beautiful, but has rough seas. It has an eerie feel to it as the few bamboo huts are collapsing, and the beach is eroding.
Do
Not much to do here except drinking or going to the beach. Walking around can be nice (but there is danger of landmines off the beaten paths).
- Doris Williams Stadium.
Drink
Black & White is a nightclub with dancefloor and food in the bar.
There is also a drinking place on Gardner street that is fairly busy though swarming with prostitutes.
Sleep
Teepro lodge - close to Buchanan Recyclables office is a place to avoid as the people who work there are persistent liars, unreliable and extremely greedy. Rooms were at time of reservation US$20, US$25 upon arrival and US$30 at check-out time. It is better go to one of the cheaper places on the main thoroughfare.
