Cervera

Cervera is a town of 9,000 people (2018) in Lleida province, and a stage in the Catalan Way of St. James. The city is characterized by the richness of its cultural and monumental heritage. Eleven monuments in the municipality are listed as Cultural Assets of National Interest (BCIN) by the Generalitat de Catalunya.

Located in the center of Catalonia, at the eastern end of the province of Lleida. From Barcelona and Lleida it is accessed via the A-2 motorway; from Girona, along the C-25 road, the transversal axis; and from Tarragona on the N-240 road to Montblanc, and from Montblanc on the C-14 road to Tàrrega, where it connects with the A-2 motorway.

The distance from Cervera to the Catalan provincial capitals is 102 km in Barcelona; 53 km to Lleida, 169 km to Girona, and 87 km to Tarragona.

  • 🌍 Santa Maria Church. , in the Catalan Gothic style, has three naves, an octagonal tower, and a remarkable Romanesque door.Around the middle of the 11th century, it already appears in a list of parishes in the diocese of Vic. The current church was begun at the beginning of the 14th century, and in 1334 the chapels of the cross on the Gospel side and the first chapel of the apse on the Epistle side were already finished. In 1358 the high altar was consecrated, and five years later the presbytery was completed. However, it was not until the middle of the fifteenth century that it was finished. In 1821 the building was extended by two feet, and the current neo-Gothic facade was built.

  • 🌍 University of Cervera, Plaça de la Universitat, 21. built between 1718 and 1740, is neoclassical in style with baroque ornaments on the exterior facade. Narcís Monturiol i Estarriol, Joan Prim, Jaume Balmes and Milà i Fontanals studied here. It is the only civil architecture building of the 18th century in Catalonia.
  • 🌍 Cervera Castle. documented for the first time in 1026. Strategically located on the road to Aragó, the castle appears to have been detached from the Cervera family since the beginning of the 14th century. It was destroyed in the 19th century, although the remains of the castle could still be seen in the middle of the 20th century, when it finally collapsed. Now only vestiges of the walls and the floor remain.

Fairs and local fetivities

  • Festa Major del Santíssim Misteri, major winter festival of Cervera. It is celebrated on February 6 and its eve on February 5 with the traditional singing of Les Completes. In the past it was the most important festival in the city, after Corpus Christi, with a large popular participation: thunderbolts, parades of the festive entourage (giants, pole dance, eagle...), processions, cattle fair, concerts and dances at the Casal Catalan and the Workers' Centr3.
  • Procession of the Puro. It is celebrated on January 16, and is a secular procession from the Paeria to the cemetery to commemorate the defeat of the Carlists against the liberals in the carlinades. Some men went there with lit cigars unlike religious processions.
  • Passion of Cervera. It has been celebrated in the city since 1447, a date that appears in the first historical documents that refer to it. In March and April, there are various performances in the Gran Teatre de la Passió de Cervera, built especially to house it. It has 1700 seats and moves the entire theatre cycle of the city with a stable theatre program during the whole year.
  • Corpus Christi, celebrated in the city since 1337. On Saturday the Cervera - Carranquers Devil's Festival is celebrated with a show of popular culture and the representation of the spoken dance by the Ball de Diables. The next day, Corpus Christi, the traditional flower carpets are made, at noon the religious procession is held in honor of the Blessed Sacrament and in the afternoon a parade with the imagery and dances of the festive entourage.
  • Feast of Saint Magi. It is celebrated on August 19, with the distribution of the miraculous water from the Sant Magí de Brufaganya Sanctuary transported by mules and horses loaded with argadells garnished with boxwood.
  • Aquelarre. It is celebrated on the weekend of the last Saturday in August since 1978. Festival of fire, witches, devils, bonfires, shows, music, magic and esotericism.
  • Isagoge, cultural week, which is celebrated the days before the Festa Major del Sant Crist.
  • Festa Major del Sant Crist, major summer festival. It is celebrated on the weekend of the fourth Sunday in September, from Friday to Monday. A wide variety of cultural and traditional events are held, among which stand out the proclamation and thunder on Friday evening, the meeting of giants on Saturday afternoon, Sunday with ceremony, passing of the festive entourage and castella performance; and on Monday, the little big party, children's festive entourage and activities for the little ones.
