Corozal (Puerto Rico)

Corozal is a mountain town and municipality of Puerto Rico. It is located in Karst Country and its relief is characterized for its mogotes (karst hills), caves and waterfalls. The town is also known for its indigenous history.

Understand

Corozal is a town of 35,000 residents (2020) in the northern part of the mountainous region of the island along a geographical region often called the Karst country (or more geologically-accurate the Northern Karst). The northern part of the municipality is home to the characteristic mogotes (distinctive karstic hill formations) while the southern part is located in the Cordillera Central, the central mountain range of Puerto Rico. The town gets its name from the corozo palm tree (Acrocomia media) a species native to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

By car

Corozal can be easily reached by car through Puerto Rico Highway-142 from the north and Highway-159. There are also carros públicos (public car rideshares) although this service can be unreliable at times.

Get around

As with most towns in Puerto Rico, Corozal is quite car-centric so driving is the best way to get around town.

See

  • 🌍 Corozal Pueblo (downtown Corozal). See the historic Roman Catholic church, Spanish-style recreational plaza, and the municipal buildings surrounded by streets and shops.
You can drive around the pueblo or park your car and walk around the square and into the plaza. The Spanish law, which regulated life in Puerto Rico in the early 19th century, stated the plaza's purpose was for celebrations and festivities. La Sagrada Familia Church is across from the plaza. The square is also home to several restaurants and bars.
  • 🌍 Mavilla Bridge (Bridge #354), PR-159 eastward from downtown Corozal. Historic bridge listed on the National Register of Historic Places that crosses the Mavilla River. The bridge is mostly famous for its headless ghost legend.

Do

  • 🌍 Cine-Teatro San Rafael, San Manuel Street by the main town square, +1 787-693-4302. Check website or call for movie and event hours. Renovated old Art Deco-style theater turned into a cinema.
