Emmerich am Rhein

Emmerich am Rhein is a city on the River Rhine in Lower Rhine in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany, with a population of around 30,000.

Emmerich lies on the River Rhine, or more precisely, on its right (northern) riverbank next to the Dutch border.

Emmerich is divided into 10 quarters (Ortsteile): Altstadt (old town), Borghees, Dornick, Elten, Hüthum, Klein-Netterden, Leegmeer, Praest, Speelberg and Vrasselt.

Tourists are most likely to concentrate on Altstadt and maybe Elten.

By plane

The nearest airports are located in 🌍 Weeze Airport NRN (NRN IATA, 37 km away), Düsseldorf (DUS IATA, 95 km), Eindhoven (NL) (EIN IATA, 120 km), Dortmund (DTM IATA, 125 km) and Schiphol (NL) (AMS IATA, 136 km). Out of these, Düsseldorf and Amsterdam Schiphol see by far the most international connections. Weeze meanwhile is mostly served by no frills airlines.

By train

🌍 Emmerich station is situated less than 1 km away from the city centre. At Duisburg main station, travellers from Germany may change trains from high speed train ICE to regional train Rhein-IJssel-Express (RE19) Arnhem - Emmerich - Wesel - Oberhausen - Duisburg - Düsseldorf. Please be aware that RE19 trains are split into two parts at Wesel station, one train set will continue to Bocholt, the other to Arnhem via Emmerich.
No long distance trains are scheduled to stop anymore since 2015. Since 2022 its possible to use the dutch OV Chipkaart transport card here too.

There are also two smaller regional train stops in Emmerich, 🌍 Emmerich-Elten and 🌍 Praest.

By car

Emmerich is connected to the highway ("Autobahn") A3 and to the federal highways ("Bundesstraße") B8 and B220.

Get around

By local transportation

A few local buses serve Emmerich and neighbouring towns. Hourly express bus service SB58 crosses the Rhine after starting at Emmerich station and serves nearby Kleve, where connection to regional train RE10 to Düsseldorf is possible, before continuing across the dutch border to Nijmegen.

  • 🌍 Rheinbrücke Emmerich (Rhine Bridge), Klever Str. largest suspension bridge in Germany at 810 m (2,660 ft). Federal highway B 220 and express bus service SB58 cross it.
  • 🌍 Heilig-Geist-Kirche. built in 1966, version of the cross made of scrap metal and the Stations of the Cross made of linen.
  • 🌍 Rheinmuseum (Rhine Museum), Martinikirchgang 2, +49 2822 75-1900. A one man submarine and a number of models of ships
  • 🌍 PAN-Kunstforum (Plakatmuseum), Agnetenstr. 2, +49 2822 53701-0. Art exhibition of Ernst Müller, lots of posters.
  • 🌍 Saint Martini, Martinikirchgang 3. Church directly on the river bank.

You'll find several restaurants and takeaway places in Emmerich town centre. About 600 metres to the left after leaving the station there's a McDonald's at Reeser Str. 73 .
