Enugu State is a state in South East Nigeria. The state has a population of over 4.4 million as of 2016.

Enugu state got its name from its capital city, Enugu. The word "Enugu" (from Enu Ugwu) means "the top of the hill".

Enugu is also known as the coal city state, this alias is as a result of the discovery of coal in the Udi ridge by Albert Kitson during his search for silver.

It is primarily inhabited by the Igbo of southeastern Nigeria and a few Idoma/Igala people in Ette (Igbo-Eze North).

Enugu is the host of Nigeria's first indigenous university, (University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN)). It is also a host of other institutions like the Enugu State University of Science & Technology (ESUT), Enugu State College of Education Technical, Federal Government College Enugu, Federal School of Dental Technology & Therapy and College of Immaculate Conception.
