Horten

Horten is a city in Vestfold, Norway. Mostly a quick stopover for travellers crossing the Oslofjord by ferry between here and Moss

Get in

By plane

The nearest airport is Torp (TRF IATA), near Sandefjord. Otherwise go for Gardermoen (OSL IATA), Oslo.

By bus

Southbound local bus to Stavern passes through Tønsberg, Sandefjord and Larvik.

By boat

The busiest crossing of the Oslofjord runs east to Moss every half hour. 30 minutes, 28 kr.

By train

Even though the Vestfold Line does not pass through the Horten city proper, Skoppum station is inside the Horten municipality, and buses into Horten are often available. Another option is to use the station at Holmestrand.

Trains run about hourly, with more trains during the Monday-Friday morning and evening peak, and fewer on Saturdays and Sundays.

New museum about history, religion and wars of the vikings, next to Borrehaugen, the viking cemetery. Cafeteria. Adult 60 kr, child 40 kr.
  • 🌍 Marinemuseet (Royal Norwegian Navy Museum), Klincks vei 9 (Karljohansvern), +47 33 03 33 97. May-Sep: daily 12:00-16:00; Oct-Apr: Sundays only). Norway's most important naval museum, focuses on the period from the Gun Boat War in the early 19th century to World War II and the Cold War. Several museum ships.
  • 🌍 Tordenskiold Oak. One of Norway's oldest and most legendary oak trees. Admiral Thordenskiold is said have moored in the tree.
