Hoyerswerda

Hoyerswerda (Upper Sorbian: Wojerecy) is in Upper Lusatia, Saxony. The town is in the historical area of settlement of the Sorbs, a Slavic linguistic and cultural minority and you can still see aspects of their heritage here, even though the language has been in decline for some time.

Understand

A town of some 71,000 people during the 1980s, the collapse of East Germany and the loss of employment in addition to the demographic structure of the local population have led it to dramatically decline in population with an officially tabulated population of only 32,000 on 2022.
