Actually, it was not in Irwin but 30 mi (48 km) away in Uniontown where, in 1967, franchisee Jim Delligatti invented and first served what would go on to become McDonald's signature burger. But the corporate suits chose the McDonald's at the North Huntingdon Square shopping center on Route 30, with its more convenient location just off the Pennsylvania Turnpike, as the site of the museum dedicated to all things Big Mac. With a 14-foot (4.25 m) fiberglass Big Mac as its centerpiece, the Big Mac Museum's handful of displays comprise an odd selection of ephemera: a vintage bun toaster and "sauce gun" dating to c. 1970, an exhibit on the evolution of Big Mac packaging that's way more exhaustively detailed than it deserves to be, and a life-size bronze bust of Delligatti himself, holding aloft a Big Mac the way other statues hold swords or torches. Free.
