Kannauj

Kannauj is at the eastern end of the Doab region of Uttar Pradesh, in a culturally transient zone between the Doab and Awadh.

Kannauj was an historically important city, being the capital of the Gurjar-Pratihar Empire during the 9th and 10th centuries.

  • 🌍 Kannauj City railway station. The station is on the Kanpur–Delhi section railway line, making the city easily accessible from both Delhi and Kanpur.

See

  • 🌍 Lakh Bahosi Sanctuary, Lakh and Bahosi villages (35-40 km southwest of Kannauj). A bird sanctuary spread over two shallow lakes.
  • 🌍 Government Archaeology Museum, Grand Truck Rd. The museum has artefacts depicting the rules and common folk spanning the numerous dynasties that rules Kannauj over the millennia.

Kannauj is the perfume capital of India. Called "attar" or "ittar", the perfume makers of Kannauj still produce fragrances using the age-old, labour-intensive and time-consuming deg bhapka hydro-distillation method.
