Koidu

Koidu (or Sefadu) is a city in Sierra Leone.

Understand

Koidu is the heart of the diamond mining region. Consequently it suffered very badly during the war. Once it had very good infrastructure, with nice buildings, water/electricity supply. All of these were destroyed during the war. Roads are dirt, even in the centre of town. Koidu has missed out on the reconstruction that has taken place throughout the rest of Sierra Leone.

Get in

The main road to Koidu is from Makeni, via Magburaka. From Matotaka, it is in very bad condition and will require a 4 wheel drive vehicle. It may be impassible in the rainy season. Expect the journey from Makeni to take 5 hours in the dry season.

Sleep

There is very little choice for accommodation in Koidu. What there is, is very basic standard.

  • 🌍 Uncle Bens Hotel, Benjamin Lane (Look for the sign and left turn just before town). Basic guest house. Electricity from 1900-0700. Some rooms available with air-conditioning and a few with hot water. No internet, basic breakfast and poor service for food. Le 165,000-210,000.
