Pella (Iowa)

Pella is a town in Central Iowa.

Understand

Established in 1847 by a group of 800 Dutch immigrants, this small town prides itself in its Dutch heritage, which is now the main reason for visitors to come here. Pella, a small town, is home to about 10.300 people, as well as to the Pella Corporation and Vermeer Manufacturing Co.

Get in

Most people drive, but if you have your own plane, you could fly into the local airport.

By plane

  • 🌍 Pella Municipal Airport. General aviation airport. No scheduled passenger service.

See

  • Vermeer Mill Museum, 714 E 1st St, +1 641 620-9463. Largest working windmill in the US $10/adult, $6/student.
  • 🌍 Tulip Time Monument, 507 Franklin St. Large monument where the annual Tulip Time Festival takes place.

Do

  • Tulip Time Festival. The largest festival in Pella is in early May. There is a show, parade and tours celebrating their Dutch heritage.

Sleep

  • Country Inn & Suites by Carlson, 315 Roosevelt Road. Part of the Radisson chain, this midsized, classically decorated hotel out of town has 69 rooms and all the usual facilities of a 4 star hotel. There's an indoor swimming pool, a fitness studio, free WiFi and coffee making facilities in the room. $110.
  • Royal Amsterdam Hotel. While its classical style may look old-fashioned, this pleasant hotel the city centre is not actually all that old. Opened in 2001, it has friendly staff, and the restaurant gets good reviews too. $130.
