Sulphur (Louisiana)
Sulphur is in Southwest Louisiana.
Understand
Sulphur has a history steeped in...tada...sulphur mining, ever since an oil prospector by the name of Eugene Hilgard discovered it in 1867 in the core sample of a salt dome. But extracting it proved difficult, as many found the hard way when they were asphyxiated by hydrogen sulfide gas while doing so. Thankfully an innovator by the name of Herman Frasch came up with a solution called the Frasch Process of bringing the element to the surface with a superheated water technique. After sulphur was harvested, nearby petrochemical refining industry served as a main provider of income for the townspeople.
