Verőce

Verőce (previously Nógrádverőce, German: Werowitz, Slovak: Verovce) is a village in the Danube Bend region.

Understand

Its name was first mentioned in a diploma between 1444 and 1460. The settlement was one of the ancient estates of the bishopric of Vác. After the Turkish occupation, the village was rebuilt by Hungarians, Slavs and Germans who returned from Upper Hungary.

By train

Trains  S70 ,  G70  and  Z70  are available in every 30 minutes (weekdays) / hourly (weekends) from Budapest-Nyugati pályaudvar via Vác. The journey from Budapest takes about half an hour and costs 840 Ft. Other direct connections are:

By narrow-gauge train

Királyrét Forest Railway (Királyréti Erdei Vasút) operates narrow-gauge trains between Kismaros and Királyrét. It was the oldest forest railway in the Börzsöny mountain range. The trains are operated between April 1 and September 30 every day, and between November 1 and March 31 on Saturdays and Sundays. The ticket costs for adult: 500 Ft900 Ft; for senior, student: 400 Ft500 Ft (depending on the distance).

Museum for local historical collection, shows the life in the village, with photos, religious objects, long-standing tools of the village farming and viniculture of the Swabians. The exhibition comprises the history of Kismaros beginning from those ethnic German settlers who arrived in the first half of the 18th century until now. In the museum the visitors can listen to old Ethnic German religious and secular songs, costums and traditions. Free entrance.
  • 🌍 Radio Museum (Rádiómúzeum), Kossuth Lajos út 43, Kismaros, +36 30 245-9118, . Closed due to reconstruction.
  • 🌍 Roman Catholic Church (Római katolikus templom), Dózsa György utca. Built in 1827, the one-nave, Classicist, front towered church. Inside, the main highlight are two 17th-century Baroque sculpture: Zakariás and Elisabeth.
  • 🌍 Monastery of House of Our Lady of Sisters of the Cistercian (Ciszterci Nővérek Boldogasszony Háza Monostor), Szuttai dűlő, Kismaros, +36 27 583-055, . Modern style, founded in 1987.

  • 🌍 Lynx House Visitor Center (Hiúz Ház Látogatóközpont), Királyrét, Szokolya, +36 27 585-625, . F 09:00–15:00, Sa Su 09:30–16:00. Here you can find "The inhabitants of the Börzsöny" exhibition, which presents the nature values of Börzsöny. Adult: 700 Ft; senior, student: 500 Ft.
  • 🌍 Királyrét Excursion Center (Királyréti Kirándulóközpont), Királyrét 7, Szokolya, +36 27 375-062, . 10:00–16:00. The exhibition presents the geological and landscape usage history of Királyrét. Adult: 500 Ft; children: 300 Ft.
  • 🌍 Királyrét Nature Trail (Királyréti tanösvény), Királyrét, Szokolya, +36 27 585-625, . There is a 2.9 km (1.8 mi) long nature trail, where you can learn about the forest and lake wildlife, the history of narrow-gauge railways and iron mining. Free to visit.
  • 🌍 Ádám Mányoki and János Viski Painter Memorial Room (Mányoki Ádám és Viski János festő emlékszobája), Fő utca 83/a, Szokolya. M–Th 08:30–15:30, F 08:30–12:00.
  • 🌍 Reformed Church (Református templom), Mányoki Ádám utca 7, Szokolya. Built in 1858 in Classicist style.
  • 🌍 Nagy-Hideg Mountain (Nagy-Hideg-hegy). Third largest mountain in Börzsöny mountain range, 864 m (2,835 ft) a.s.l.
