There are many places called York:
Canada
Historically, "muddy York" (the Town of York, established 1793, became Toronto in 1834) was the seat of York County. The Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto split from the county (now York Region) in 1953; a York Township became York, North York and East York - three of the six Metro Toronto boroughs. The boroughs were amalgamated into the City of Toronto in 1998, but many "York" place names (Yorkville, Yorkdale, York Mills) survive in and around Toronto, Ontario:
- York Region - A region directly north of Toronto which includes Markham, Richmond Hill and Vaughan.
- North York, York and East York as three of the six former boroughs of what is now Toronto.
- York (Quebec) — Formerly an independent municipality, now part of the city of Gaspé, in the Gaspé Peninsula.
