Boissevain

Boissevain is a small town of around 1,500 people (2016) in the Prairie Mountain region of Manitoba.

Understand

Boissevain is an unincorporated urban community in Manitoba near the North Dakota border that held town status prior to 2015. It is located within the Municipality of Boissevain – Morton. It is notable for its proximity to the International Peace Garden, a short drive south on Highway 10. The community also displays a number of wall murals as a tourist attraction. The community was named after Adolphe Boissevain who helped finance the Canadian Pacific Railway. Boissevain, not far from Turtle Mountain and Turtle Mountain Provincial Park, also formerly hosted the "International Turtle Derby", a turtle race, each summer.

Get in

Boissevain is less than an hour south for Brandon and 3 hours southwest of Winnipeg. It is 20 minutes north of the International Peace Garden Border Crossing, a 24-hour port of entry which connects to the United States and becomes U.S. Route 281.

  • 🌍 Tommy the Turtle, 298 Mountain St (PTH 10 & Mountain St). 28-foot-tall, 10,000-lb western painted turtle that serves as an icon for both the Turtle Derby and the community as a whole. Three small museums are next to the statue.

A 3.65 sq mi (9.5 km2) park located adjacent to the International Peace Garden Border Crossing along the Canada–United States border. It was established on July 14, 1932, as a symbol of the peaceful relationship between the two countries. Visitors from either country can enter the park without passing through customs, and may move throughout the park (crossing the international boundary at will) without restriction. However, the border crossing stations for Canada and the U.S. are located on the roads just north and south (respectively) of the access to the garden, requiring all visitors – including those returning to the country from which they arrived – to go through the immigration procedures of their destination country upon leaving the garden.
