Castroville

Castroville is a city in the South Texas Plains. Castroville is known as the Little Alsace of Texas, because its founder brought in a large group of settlers from Alsace in the 1840s.

  • German-style country cottages. Look for the unevenly-sloping roofs.
  • The Steinbach House, 100 Karm St., +1 830 538-3142. Come visit the Alsatian house originally built in Walbach, France in the 1600s. The house was relocated to Castroville in 1998. The Chamber of Commerce now operates here.
  • Landmark Inn State Historical Site, 402 Florence St., +1 830 931-2133. Tour the Inn exhibit area and take a self-guided walk of the historic grounds. One hour guided tours available. Features a bed and breakfast with 8 historic gues rooms.
  • St. Louis Catholic Church, 610 Madrid, +1 830 931-2826. The third church to house the ever-growing St. Louis parish community, built between 1868 and 1870. Beautiful stain glass windows and original wood carved altar and statues.

  • Tours of Historic Castroville-Castroville Garden Club, +1 830 931-2262. Enjoy a scenic walking tour by the many historic Alsatian style homes and buildings. Minimum of 15 persons per tour. Step-on tours available on your van or bus. Please schedule at least two weeks in advance.
  • Alsatian Golf Club, 1339 CR 4516, +1 830 931-3100. An 18 hole championship golf course featuring distance wedge game range, full size driving range, practice bunkers, three-level putting green and pre-round putting green.
  • South Texas Maize, 911 Hwy 90 E, Hondo, +1 820 741-3968. It's a family experience with food and fun for all! Picnic area, barrel train, farm animals, rubber duck races, tube slides, goat walk hay pyramid.
  • Medina Lake & Dam (8 miles north of Castroville). Visit the Bandera County Park and Medina Lake for fishing, boating, picnicking and water sports.
  • Paradise Canyon, 2222 CR 2615, Rio Medina, +1 830 751-9911. For more than 50 years Paradise Canyon has offered a little piece of Heaven on the Medina River. Relax, swim, picnic, camp, fish, laugh & enjoy.
  • Castroville Regional Park, 816 Alsace St., +1 830 931-0033. Enjoy outdoor activities along the Medina River such as camping, swimming, hiking, tennis courts, san volleyball and covered picnic areas. Also features 40 complete pull-thru RV sites.
