Mpulungu

Mpulungu is in Zambia, at the southern tip of Lake Tanganyika.

Get in

The town is the southern terminus for the ferry MV Liemba; the northern terminus is Kigoma in Tanzania. buses and vans to and from Kasama. then train to Kapiri Mposhi or Tanzania.

Travel to Mpulungu from Kasama is 203 km and takes 3 hours.

See

  • 🌍 Ruins of Niamkolo Church. This was the site of one of the first British missions in Zambia, established in 1884 just a few years after the expeditions of Livingstone. The missionary flourished and a large stone church was constructed in 1896. However in 1908 the region was plagued by sleeping sickness and the site was vacated. The church has since fallen into disrepair but remains an national monument.
