The Buried City In the fertile land of the Wolf Creek Valley southwest of modern-day Perryton, a sizable agricultural civilization flourished for some time between 1100 and 1450, farming beans, corn, and squash, and hunting buffalo on the plains. Before their mysterious disappearance, around the same time as the Anasazi vanished from Mesa Verde, they built large homes and other structures of wood and earth, arranged in 5 villages along Wolf Creek, which are still under excavation today. The sites rest on private lands today, but a historical marker gives some information, and a visit to Lake Fryer will help the visitor understand why this area was such a logical choice. The museum in town provides more information. |
