The Rio metro area still keeps more than 30% of its green territory conserved. Although a large part of this green area is located in the municipalities of Rio (the state capital city), NiterĆ³i, SĆ£o GonƧalo, ItaboraĆ, MaricĆ”, TanguĆ”, Rio Bonito and Cachoeiras de Macacu (in Leste Metropolitano), nearly a third of it is in Baixada Fluminense. The fact that a substantial part of the preserved green area of the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro is distributed across the majority of the 13 municipalities of Baixada Fluminense shows the tourist potential of this part of Greater Rio in the ecological segment. Tourists can schedule and take guided tours in several of these protected areas. Two of the main protected green areas in Baixada Fluminense are the TinguĆ” Biological Reserve (Reserva BiolĆ³gica do TinguĆ”), whose largest part is in the municipality of Nova IguaƧu, and the Guapimirim Environmental Protection Area (Ćrea de ProteĆ§Ć£o Ambiental de Guapimirim), at the shoreline of Guanabara Bay.
